COVID-19 Employment Update: New Federal Leave RequirementsOn March 18, 2020, Congress passed and the President signed into law HR 6201, a broad-ranging response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Two principal provisions of HR 6201 will impact employers—a temporary expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to provide paid leave for employees unable to work due to closure of schools and child-care facilities and temporary paid sick leave for COVID-19-related absences. HR 6201 will become effective April 2, 2020 (15 days after enactment).

Furlough, Layoff, or Reduction in Force in Light of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, Effective April 2, 2020

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act was signed by our president. This is an economic stimulus plan aimed at addressing the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on Americans and introducing paid sick leave and an expanded family and medical leave act to the nation’s employers impacted by COVID-19 and those serving as caregivers for individuals with COVID-19.

DC Dept of Health - COVID-19: Guidance for Essential (Non-Healthcare) Workers on How to Stay Safe in
the Workplace

Permit/Plan Reviews: All permit applications and plan reviews are online including “walk thrus” for small construction projects of 1,000 sq. ft, supplemental permits, and elevator certificates. Video consultations are available for large construction projects greater than 1,000 sq. ft. Payments can be made by credit card, or checks can be mailed to a lock box.

Effective March 23, 2020, the department’s lobby areas at 1 Harrison Street, Leesburg, are closed to the public.
  • All of the department’s services will continue to be provided during normal operating hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Customers may contact the department 703-777-0220, email or Loudoun Express Request.
  • Customers may continue to schedule inspections through the Web Automated Inspection Request System (WAIRS).
  • Permit and plan applications may be dropped off on tables set up outside the department’s main lobby area on the second floor of the Government Center. Customers are encouraged to complete their permit applications prior to arrival.

Montgomery County readies $20 million in coronavirus relief for businesses

Montgomery County Permitting

DPS offices are closed to walk-in customers and visitors.

  • Limited access to drop off plan corrections or pick up approved plans and permits that were originally submitted via paper.
  • The Fast Track and Walk-Thru services are now closed to walk-in customers. These permit types must be applied for electronically.
  • Payments must be made online via check or credit card. If preferred, checks may be mailed.
  • Peformance bonds, letters of credit, legal documents, etc. must be mailed.
  • All in office Design Consultations, eServices training and Code Modification Hearings are suspended until further notice. These services will be scheduled remotely.
  • All other questions need to be directed to 311.

Prince Georges County Building Permitting

Customers can now complete the building permit application via the web. Once the application is completed online, the customer’s information is entered directly into the County’s permitting system without the need for a staff member to retype the information.
