AGC’s Supervisory Training Program (STP) was developed, updated, and field-tested by and for contractors. The program focuses on the knowledge and skills that every supervisor must have to be an effective manager of people, time, equipment and materials.

Recognize your style leadership and learn how to utilize other styles when appropriate. Learn how worker needs affect worker motivation. Study the affect that attitudes and abilities have on job performance and how to positively influence. The leader as goal setter, communicator and role model will all be discussed, with job site applications stressed.

Positive direct communication is a goal supervisors should set for themselves. Learn about positive direct communication and how to help people communicate with you, how to listen better, and how to deal with a difficult person. Negotiating and communicating with all organizational levels and with groups will studied also.

Gain the knowledge of how to solve and prevent problems and how to make decisions. Study technical problems, human performance problems and scheduling problems. Learn how to avoid barriers to creative problem solving and how to create a problem solving atmosphere at the jobsite.

Learn about common construction contract clauses and how to read contracts. Construction disputes, including differing site conditions, claims, delays and construction defects will be studied.

Learn basic construction planning and scheduling skills - how to prepare bar chart schedules and critical path schedules; how to read complex project schedules; the basics of project management by scheduling; and employing acceleration techniques.

Learn about cost control procedures, at both the project level and the corporate level; and about the cost control cycle and ensuring effective production control.

Focus on managing the safety function. We will review the documentation, reference materials and advisory services that are available. Using the project schedule to help prevent losses will be studied. Students will learn how to select of methods and equipment to prevent loss. Other subjects we will study include: delegating responsibility for safety, equipment maintenance, and common construction hazards

Students will learn how to plan, organize and staff a construction project. Planning will be stressed for production and support activities. Students will learn how to formulate policies and procedures. Subcontractor management, purchasing and receiving will all be studied. Project startup, site layout and close out will be studied.

Organizing a project with productivity improvement as a goal will be studied. Students will learn how to calculate and measure worker productivity. During this semester, we will challenge the work process, learn about personnel management, and practice work improvement analysis. Understanding worker's abilities and the impact of environmental factors will be studied. We will complete the course with a discussion of implementing and monitoring the productivity program.

This course explores the dynamic relationships that exist between construction contractors of all types, (general contractors, subcontractors, specialty contractors, material and equipment suppliers), to accomplish the execution of a successful project. This course will help the construction professional to understand and recognize the importance of each part of the construction system and how to coordinate the work within the system.
